Storage Tips & Helpful Information

The following is a list of simple tips on how to properly store your goods:

Furniture

  • Cover all furniture and disassemble if possible.
  • Wrap table legs with packing paper as scratch protection.
  • Lay down blankets between the furniture and the floor of the storage unit.
  • Stack chairs seat-to-seat with cloth or paper separating them.
  • Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls.

Metal

  • Wipe a few drops of oil on bicycles and tools as a rust protector.
  • Avoid oil staining by storing exposed items in a separate space. (15% off 2nd mini-storage unite or climate controlled unit)

Breakables

  • Wrap plates, saucers, and bowls individually before placing it in a china carton.
  • Use a china carton divider kit for increased security.
  • Fill paper into bottom, top and empty spaces in the carton.


Books and Valuable Papers

  • Use file boxes. They are the best containers for your important documents.
  • Pack books flat and fill any empty space to minimize movement.
  • Avoid overfilling cartons and remember that Books are heavy.


Large Appliances and Equipment

  • Leave appliance doors slightly ajar. Moisture and mildew will damage your valuables so make sure your refrigerator or freezer is clean and dry.
  • Use valuable storage space inside appliance's for small items.

Clothes

  • Avoid excessive wrinkling to your clothes by employing wardrobe boxes.

Organize Your Storage Unit

  • Leave a few inches of space between your items and the wall for better ventilation.
  • Gather the things you are least likely to need during the time you are storing your belongings. Place these things in the room first.
  • Store heaviest items on the bottom and lighter items on the top.
  • Place cartons so that you can read the label which lists their contents.
  • Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and dresser drawers for linens or small, delicate items.
  • Place the things you are most likely to need closest to the door for easy access.
  • Label boxes.
  • Take home a list of labeled boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods.
  • Do not lean items against walls.
  • Leave a walk-way to the rear of your space for easy access.
  • Securely latch and lock the door to your storage room when leaving.
